A lesson plan for grades 1–2 English Language Arts
After teacher modeling, students read a magazine article independently and use the 3-2-1 strategy to comprehend what they read. As an introduction to this lesson, the teacher engages students in a brainstorming activity that challenges them to list things they know about polar bears. After students read parts of an article about polar bears aloud to the class, the teacher models how to identify three new things they learned, two interesting facts, and one question they still have after the reading. After a brief review of the 3-2-1 reading strategy, students select and read an article from a magazine appropriate to the grade level. Students practice using the 3-2-1 strategy by completing a graphic organizer while reading the article. At the conclusion of the lesson, students share what they learned from reading their articles. Readwritethink provides suggestions for extension activities and links to 3-2-1 strategy handouts.
