Camera red-eye

A lesson plan for grade 7 Science
In this Science Update, students explore why taking flash pictures of people sometimes gives eyes a red glow. David Williams, director of the University of Rochester’s Center for Visual Science, says red-eye occurs when the camera’s flash reflects off the back of the eye into the camera lens. People can avoid red-eye by using a camera where the flash and the lens are farther apart. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions to engage students in discussion about why camera flashes cause red eyes, why that usually affects people with blue or pale eyes, and how to reduce the red-eye effect. This activity also contains links to an article about sight and human vision and to How Stuff Works, which has a piece on the inner workings of cameras.
