A lesson plan for grades 9–10 English Language Arts
In this lesson, students write catalog poems about human emotion using Raymond Carver’s poem “Fear” as a model. After the teacher engages students in a discussion about why lists are so popular in today’s society, the class collaborates to create a list of “human emotions”. Then, students add their specific thoughts about the emotions and use the material to write a group poem. In the second session, the teacher introduces Carver’s poem and students discuss how the poet presents the emotion. In small groups, students write and revise poems to present to the class, which provides feedback for the production of the final draft.
