Students create word journals as a strategy for examining unfamiliar vocabulary in literature. After engaging students in a class discussion about how they typically learn new words, the teacher introduces them to a new way of learning vocabulary by organizing unfamiliar words in a word journal to create a personal dictionary. Students define as many words as possible from a list of words from an upcoming chapter or novel without using reference materials. Then students meet in groups to discuss the words. The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate that each student knows different words and has a need to learn different words. After explaining the “Word Journal” handout, provided by Readwritethink, the teacher models the activity by reading a few sentences aloud from a text and verbalizing thoughts on unfamiliar words. The word journal can be used either as an introduction to new terms in a text or as a method students use to evaluate new vocabulary words they encounter in the text. Students are challenged in the final project to use 15 words from their word journal and to create a PowerPoint presentation.
