Buzz! Whiz! Bang! Using comic books to teach onomatopoeia

A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
In this lesson, students use comic strips to find onomatopoetic words, develop a vocabulary list from the words, and discuss why writers use onomatopoeia. In the introductory activity, students listen for words that imitate the natural sound associated with action while the teacher reads a comic strip. When students have identified all of these words, the teacher gives a brief definition of onomatopoeia. After the class discusses why an author would use these types of words in stories and comic strips, students apply their knowledge by individually finding onomatopoeias in comics provided by the teacher. In the second session, the teacher reviews the definition of onomatopoeia, and students are challenged to use a planning sheet to create an original six-panel comic strip using these sound words. Students should make sure the comic strip tells a story and that it has a plot, characters, and action. Adhering to the guidelines of the rubric provided by Readwritethink, students use an online interactive comic creator tool to develop an original comic strip with dialogue and onomatopoeia. After students share their comics with the class, the teacher engages them in a discussion evaluating the use of this literary device.
