A lesson plan for grades 6–8 Science
In this Science Update, students explore the benefits of music programs in schools. According to Glenn Schellenberg of the University of Toronto, music lessons may boost the Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Dr. Schellenberg’s team studied a hundred and forty-four first graders over the course of a year. Some were given free keyboard or voice lessons, while others were given drama lessons or no lessons at all. The findings suggest that all IQs rose about four points from pre-test to post-test; however, the average increase in the IQs of students enrolled in a music group was seven points. The drama group showed improved social skills, but no major increase in IQ. Dr. Schellenberg suspects that music and schoolwork actually build similar learning skills, but that music motivates kids more.
