Food court: Looking back and moving forward
http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L524
A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
In this lesson, students conduct and present the results of surveys in several ways. The process standards Communication and Representation are fundamental to this lesson. Illuminations provides several activity sheets and detailed instructions for completing the lesson.
Students will:
- Determine the possible combinations given two variables.
- Create a bar graph and a pictograph from data collected by a survey.
- Find the mean, median, and mode of a given set of data.
- Find the range of a given set of data.
- Construct and describe a box plot.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Design investigations to address a question and consider how data-collection methods affect the nature of the data set.
- Collect data using observations, surveys, and experiments.
- Represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
- Describe the shape and important features of a set of data and compare related data sets, with an emphasis on how the data are distributed.
- Use measures of center, focusing on the median, and understand what each does and does not indicate about the data set.
