Figurative language awards ceremony

A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
In this lesson, students find examples of their favorite literary devices in texts they have read throughout the course. Before beginning this activity, students should already be familiar with figurative language such as simile, metaphor, and personification. After independently exploring books known for their figurative language, students divide into groups and are assigned a literary device. Students search the books for their assigned literary device and choose their top five selections. The class will then participate in an awards ceremony honoring their favorite use of figurative language in a text. Students will volunteer their selections, and the entire class will cast votes for the “Best Use of Simile”. This procedure is followed for the other literary devices being studied. At the end of the activity, students go back to their groups to write acceptance speeches containing as many uses of figurative language as possible. Readwritethink provides a list of books that can be used with this activity and a graphic organizer to help students identify figurative language in texts. An alternative of this lesson would be to complete the same activity with songs instead of texts.
