A lesson plan for grades 6–8 English Language Arts
Students examine the simple sentence, “She walked into the room,” in an activity that helps to increase use of specific words and connotation in writing. After students act out ways that a person in the sentence might enter the room, the teacher engages students in a conversation about how to change the verb in a sentence to accurately portray action. When the teacher is confident students are prepared to consider the word choice in their own writing, students choose a paragraph in their writer’s journals or a paper that they are working on to revise, paying particular attention to connotation. Students re-write the selected paragraph to create a vivid image of the setting and action being presented. This activity can continue with more practice on their student writing or as a homework assignment. Readwritethink offers links to web resources that provide more information about connotation.
