This lesson introduces the concept of cause and effect through an activity where students construct their own diamante poems. After introducing the concept of cause and effect, the teacher engages students in a brainstorming activity to compile a list of cause and effect statements. Students then analyze the statements and color code each part according to cause and effect. After a brief review of parts of speech, the teacher demonstrates the form of a diamante poem and the class collaborates to write an example. In small groups, students write diamante poems by changing the format slightly to show a cause and effect relationship. After students practice writing these poems in small groups using the online tools provided by Readwritethink, they write individual cause and effect diamante poems. Using online resources, students type and edit their poems and then print them for publication. Readwritethink provides several links to resources that explain cause and effect and give examples of diamante poems.
