A lesson plan for grade 5 English Language Arts
This lesson challenges students to evaluate the effective characteristics of preparing and delivering a persuasive speech. After the teacher introduces speechwriting to the students, the class brainstorms about times they have heard speeches. Students participate in an online speech tutorial that discusses the characteristics of an effective speech. Then, the teacher reads a speech and guides students through the process of evaluating the speech using a rubric. When students are familiar with campaign speeches, they will plan and write their own persuasive speech, using a helpful checklist and graphic organizer. As students complete the drafts of their speech, the teacher explains how important it is to rehearse their speech and gives them time to practice in class and at home. In small groups, students present their speeches to classmates, who evaluate them using the rubric. After all students have presented, the class reflects on the speeches to assess the content and delivery of the speeches. Readwritethink provides links to helpful websites on speechwriting, suggestions for extension activities, and opportunities for reflection.
