Focus on first lines: Increasing comprehension through prediction strategies

A lesson plan for grades 9–12 English Language Arts
Students make predictions about course texts then return to their predictions throughout the course to discuss the prediction strategy and to increase reading comprehension. The teacher begins the introductory lesson with an explanation of first sentences from works students will be reading througout the course. Then students make predictions about the work based on the first line of writing. Using “Young Goodman Brown” as an example of the task, the teacher guides students through the online think-aloud activity. After students have made predictions about the opening lines of several works, the teacher goes through the quotations with the entire class, discussing the variety of responses. The class revisits this pre-reading strategy with each text the class studies throughout the rest of the year, and students will identify any differences between the predictions that were accurate and those that were not. This lesson plan provides several guiding questions for implementation of the activity, extension activities, and links to helpful web resources.
