This lesson combines historical research and acrostic poetry. After listing all they know about the American Revolution, students work in groups to answer the questions they have about this historical period. Then, after reading If You Lived at the Time of the American Revolution by Kay Moore, the teacher engages students in a writing activity about this period in American history. Once the teacher explains that students will complete a research project about an historical figure, students are given the project guidelines, a writing rubric, and a graphic organizer to assist in the process. After demonstrating to students how to determine important information related to the guiding question, the teacher models note-taking skills. When students have completed the research portion of the project, the teacher explains acrostic poetry and models how to write this type of poem. Then students create their own original acrostic poems. In pairs, students comment on each other’s poems and then revise their work. After students have presented their poems to the class, the teacher engages them in conversation about what they learned through the activity. Readwritethink provides graphic organizers, rubrics for assessment, and links to a variety of helpful web and print resources. The lesson plan suggests extension activities and offers opportunities for reflection.
