Be a reading detective: Finding similarities and differences in ideas

A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
Students learn to use Venn diagrams as a tool for comparing and contrasting subjects in nonfiction writing. After participating in an introductory activity comparing apples and oranges, students work in small groups to compare other items by listing the characteristics. Then, students read about a piece on the various types of whales and discuss the similarities and differences within the species. After a brief lesson on clue words in reading, students continue to add words to their descriptions of whales. Using the lists they have made, students work in small groups to complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting two types of whales. Students read a compare/contrast paragraph or article, and with a partner, they discuss the similarities and differences found in the text. As a concluding activity, students work independently to complete a Venn diagram on the subjects in their article.
