A lesson plan for grade 1 Science
In this lesson, students learn that the food they eat comes from farms. The lesson begins with students learning a song about growing crops on a farm; they learn from the lyrics the kinds of things that farmers do and what things they need to grow plants well. Then the teacher leads students in a discussion about what they learned from the song, which focuses on the five steps necessary to growing food. Next, the teacher challenges students to identify and explain the images they see in pictures that have farming themes. Then, after discussing this list, students brainstorm and come up with some examples of the kinds of people, activities, weather conditions, and machines that might be involved in and affect each phase of the farm-to-table process. Finally, the teacher reads, The Tomatoes Grow in the Fields, which describes how tomatoes are grown. Throughout the read aloud, the teacher asks students questions in order to gauge the student comprehension and then has students draw scenes from the story. Science NetLinks provides links to all necessary web resources for the lesson and detailed directions for completing each activity.
