A lesson plan for grades 6–8 Mathematics
In the first four lessons of this unit, students investigated the Paper Pool game, collected data, identified patterns, and made predictions about the number of hits, the pocket in which the ball lands, and the path of travel. In this lesson, students finalize their work and write a report that summarizes all of their findings. Illuminations provides a project description, an activity sheet, project rubrics, scoring samples, and detailed instructions for completing the lesson.
Students will:
- Use the data that they collected during this unit to prepare a final report about the mathematics of the Paper Pool game.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Model and solve contextualized problems using various representations, such as graphs, tables, and equations.
- Represent, analyze, and generalize a variety of patterns with tables, graphs, words, and, when possible, symbolic rules.
- Select, create, and use appropriate graphical representations of data, including histograms, box plots, and scatterplots.
