Short story fair: Responding to short stories in multiple media and genres

A lesson plan for grades 9–12 English Language Arts
In this lesson, students explore short story as a genre of literature. Prior to the project, students read a short story, write about their connections to the story, and participate in a class discussion. The teacher then introduces or reviews literary elements using a PowerPoint presentation provided by Readwritethink. Over the next few class sessions, students explore short story collections in groups, reading several and choosing one for each person to study individually. After students have chosen the short story they would like to share with the class, they write about why they selected it and why it might be interesting to classmates. Then, once students have selected a project to complete, they use the rubric and online tools, to prepare their project, display their work, and answer questions classmates have about the content of their project and short story. Once all students have shared their work, students reflect on the assignment. Readwritethink provides links to interactive online literary elements tools, project guidelines and examples, rubrics, and graphic organizers. This lesson plan also suggests extension activities and provides links to helpful web resources.
