In this lesson, students will learn how to determine which ideas work best to inspire a conversation, how to stay focused on a particular idea, and how to talk with other students in a way that leads to deeper thinking. During a read-aloud of Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch, the teacher challenges students to write down ideas they might want to discuss with other readers. While reading the first part of the book, the teacher models how to ask questions that might lead to good conversation. Then, as the second part of the book is read, the teacher stops occasionally and asks students questions and has them write down their ideas. Using the questions students have written down, the teacher guides students in a discussion about the text, probing for deeper answers and challenging them to make connections with other answers. When the activity is complete, the teacher asks students to reflect on the conversation. Readwritethink suggests activities to extend the lesson.
