A lesson plan for grades K–1 Mathematics
This lesson introduces and provides practice with the measurable attributes of weight. It also gives an opportunity to assess student knowledge of and skill in using measurement of mass. This learning experience focuses students’ attention on the attributes of weight using hands-on activities and active learning. Illuminations provides helpful activity sheets, graphic organizers, and detailed instructions for completing the lesson.
Students will:
- Understand weight as a measurable attribute of objects.
- Understand how to measure weight using standard and nonstandard units.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Recognize the attributes of length, volume, weight, area, and time.
- Measure with multiple copies of units of the same size, such as paper clips laid end to end.

Grade 1
- Goal 2: Measurement - The learner will use non-standard units of measure and tell time.
- Objective 2.01: For given objects:
- Select an attribute (length, capacity, mass) to measure (use non-standard units).
- Develop strategies to estimate size.
- Compare, using appropriate language, with respect to the attribute selected.
- Objective 2.01: For given objects:
Kindergarten
- Goal 2: Measurement - The learner will explore concepts of measurement.
- Objective 2.01: Compare attributes of two objects using appropriate vocabulary (color, weight, height, width, length, texture).
