Alliteration all around

A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
The teacher introduces students to alliteration using one of several picture books by Pamela Duncan Edwards. After hearing techniques used by the author during a read-aloud, students attempt to define alliteration. Then the teacher chooses one passage to show the students without reading the words aloud. After seeing the images, students write one or two alliterative sentences describing the action in the picture. The teacher leads the class in a discussion of why alliteration might be used in the media and popular songs. After reading Alligators All Around by Maurice Sendak, the teacher models how to write an acrostic poem, and students are challenged to write their own alliterative acrostic poems using an online interactive tool. When students are more comfortable with alliteration, they will use this poetic device to write either an original alphabet or number book. The final activity in this short unit challenges students to read tongue twisters aloud to each other. Then, after reading “How to Write a Newfangled Tongue Twister” by Bruce Lansky, students write their own tongue twisters and share their favorite alliterative writing assignment with the class. Readwritethink provides several extension opportunities for this lesson.
