The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary “encompasses the waters that surround Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara Islands, extending from mean high tide to six nautical miles offshore around each of the five islands. The sanctuary’s primary goal is the protection of the natural and cultural resources contained within its boundaries.”It website contains a variety of informational and educational resources. The Maritime Heritage pages include historic resources, a shipwreck database, information about the indigenous Chumash people, shipwreck exhibits, journal entries from a shipwreck survivor, and shipwreck features from the Panama Route. The Education portion of the site contains video clips, an underwater slide gallery, an encyclopedia of the sanctuaries, and Marine Digital Reserves Lab. This lab is a simulation that allows students to choose to be a commercial fisherman or a different stakeholder and decide where to put these “no-take” areas around Anacapa Island. Other educational activities include:
- Plumes & Blooms. This activity provides information about the physical and biological processes that make the Channel Islands region unique.
- Nautical Chart. This activity introduces students to marine navigation and the main components of a nautical chart using a local chart for Channel Islands waters.
- Monitoring a Habitat. In this activity, students learn how marine biologists monitor marine habitats in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
There is also information about workshops, student competitions, Oceans Week activities, and more.
