A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
Students create bar graphs and circle graphs and find the range and mode of two data sets. Illuminations provides grid paper, a link to the circle grapher tool, and detailed instructions for completing the lesson.
Students will:
- Create and compare bar graphs.
- Pose questions about the data set, which can be answered from the representations.
- Recognize and read circle graphs.
- Find the range and mode of a data set.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
- Use measures of center, focusing on the median, and understand what each does and does not indicate about the data set.
- Compare different representations of the same data and evaluate how well each representation shows important aspects of the data.
