A tessellation is any repeating pattern of interlocking shapes. Totally Tessellated, a ThinkQuest site created by students, explores the history and construction of these beautiful designs. Mathematical applications, related art, tilings (patterns of shapes with straight edges) and Escher tilings (tessellations of irregular shapes) are covered. The Escher section describes the life and work of the artist synonymous with tessellations and even dissects his famous designs to explain shapes, patterns and techniques used to create the effect.
