Decoding “The Matrix”: Exploring dystopian characteristics through film

A lesson plan for grades 9–10 English Language Arts
Students analyze dystopian societies in this lesson that uses clips of the futuristic film, The Matrix. The teacher introduces the idea of utopias by engaging students in a discussion about the characteristics of “perfect” societies. After viewing a clip of the film, students are challenged to compare dystopias and utopias using a Venn diagram. This lesson offers several extension ideas and resources for evaluating other works that focus on dystopian societies.
