http:/college.usc.edu/vhi/creatingcharacter/lesson/introduction/index.html
A lesson plan for grade 6 Guidance and Social Studies
This introductory lesson begins with an interview of Elena Nightengale, Jewish Survivor of the Holocaust, who discusses the importance of respecting all human beings regardless of differences. Nightengale also discusses integrity and honesty and the power of the human connection. This introductory lesson engages students in a discussion about the concept of “hero” and identification of people they consider to be heroes. After students list characteristics they associate with the heroes they have named, they watch the video clip of Elena Nightengale’s testimony. Then, the teacher explains that they will explore the characteristics of Courage, Responsibility, Respect, Citizenship, Justice, and Fairness, and Perseverance while hearing testimonies from Holocaust survivors. This activity contains a downloadable lesson plan and links to the video clip.
