Spend a week visiting a family on the Florida coast and experience the conditions, preparations and events preceding a hurricane. Activities include:
- Packing a “disaster duffel” for emergency and evacuation situations
- Preparing and discussing your family’s emergency plan
- Shopping for emergency supplies
- Preparing your home and yard for hurricane conditions
- Preparing to evacuate your home
- Making smart decisions while weathering a storm
- Returning home safely
Hurricane Strike! is a multimedia learning package aimed primarily at middle school students. It integrates disaster safety and preparedness with science instruction, providing an engaging interactive learning environment. It also dovetails with science and safety content in the American Red Cross Masters of Disaster curriculum. Explore basic concepts of atmospheric science, climate, and geography, while also learning some important and possibly life-saving safety and preparedness skills.
Each day’s scene is composed of three main pieces: the forecast update (accessed by clicking the TV), a safety interactive piece (accessed by clicking Hugo, the dog), and science and safety content available from a laptop computer (accessed by clicking the large, red, left arrow to go to the computer room). Pull-down menus on the laptop allow you to access content from previous days and to go to the tracking chart or worksheet.
