Hinterland Who's Who
This Canadian site is the online companion to a popular television program of the same name. Its main focus is to educate viewers in their role in preserving nature.
The Species Fact Sheets section of the site provides in-depth information on the species of insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles which live in Canada. Many of these creatures are found in the United States as well.
Go to the video and sound clips area and use the drop-down menu to find audio and video of selected species. Windows Media Player and Quicktime plug-ins are required.
The Action and Awareness section has suggestions on how viewers can help preserve nature in their communities and their own backyards. And the glossary section provides definitions for over 460 words relating to ecosystems, habitats, and wildlife.
Educators will find lesson plans which will “inform young people about important conservation concepts such as biodiversity, sustainability, ecosystem conservation, and endangered species recovery.”
