The Museum of Westward Expansion

Located at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, the Museum of Westward Expansion tells the story of the westward pioneers, mountain men and trappers, Buffalo Soldiers and the American Indians in the nineteenth century.
The museum “contains over 150 quotes from diaries, journals, letters and speeches. The designers of the museum felt the actual words of nineteenth century pioneers were the most powerful way to tell their story.”- Highlights include:
- Audio clips feature narratives from prominent figures in America’s pioneering history: Thomas Jefferson, William Clark, a Buffalo Soldier, and an female overlander;
- 19th Century Timeline;
- Information related to each of the major Exhibits in the museum: Explorers, Mountain Men & Trappers, Soldiers, American Indians, St. Louis Commerce, Independence, Missouri, Farmers, Buffalo Hunters, Miners, Overland Wagon, Spanish Caretta, and Bull Boat;
- And an “Interactive Classroom Tour”.
