Ice Mummies, a companion website to the PBS NOVA program of the same name, examines a 1998 archaeological expedition to South America to find out if the stories of human sacrifice in the Andes was true. There scientists found the remains of a mummy they named Sarita. The Siberian Ice Princess, found on the steppes of eastern Russian, provides new clues to the role and power of women in the nomadic peoples of ancient Siberia. A single burial site in Central Thailand reflects what can be gleaned about a person’s life, death, and the society in which she lived. Examine the complex issues that arise when a mummy is found; from who owns it, to how to study it, or to whether it should be put on display.
Included on this site is a classroom teacher’s guide.
