The Miami Museum of Science’s Hurricane: Storm Science website teaches kids about how hurricanes work and the scientific instruments used to measure and track them as well as helping them understand the experience of people who lived through these natural disasters.Inside a Hurricane explains how hurricanes form from a cluster of storms to a tropical storm and into a hurricane. This section also tells about planes that fly into the storms searching for the hurricane as well as preparing your home for one of these huge storms. In the instruments sections, kids will learn about the ingredients that meteorologists use to predict storms including air pressure, moisture, and temperature. They will also learn how to conduct weather experiments themselves by making such tools as a barometer, a rain gauge, and an anemometer. Finally, they will meet the Benitez family who survived hurricane Andrew and read each family members’ experiences in their own words.
