Located in the home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, the Center’s mission is to “preserve and interpret Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Hartford home and the Center’s historic collections, create a forum for vibrant discussion of her life and work, and inspire individuals to embrace and emulate her commitment to social justice by effecting positive change.”The website celebrates the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who is best known as the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The book galvanized the abolitionist movement and contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War.”
The site includes biographical information on the author and her family members and includes photographs of them. Students will find a bibliography of biographical resources for young readers. Teachers may find the primary source documents provided on the site useful in teaching their students about this time in history. Included are lesson plans which were developed at a Teachers’ Institute using these materials.
