The Glory of Byzantium

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s online exploration, The Glory of Byzantium celebrates the art of the second golden age of Byzantine art and includes examples of art from the first golden age of Byzantine art and the late period, which ended with the Turkish conquest in 1453.This online exhibit allows visitors to do the following:
- Explore Byzantine works of art
- Investigate a theme in Byzantine art
- Probe the history of Byzantium
- View the works of art in a visual timeline
- Check a definition in the glossary
There is also a section of resources for teachers that include “cues to encourage students to begin to talk about the works of art, express their ideas about what the art means, and realize the formal elements making the meaning clear. Points of discussion may include, but are certainly not limited to, adornment and regalia, symbols and attributes, icons, religious narrative, gesture and pose, action and inaction, color, pattern, techniques of artistic production.”
