Building Chairs with Don King

A lesson plan for Grades 9–12 Visual Arts I
In this ARTSEDGE lesson, students use the work of Don King, an artist and former range botanist to investigate the evolution of chair design and the practical, decorative, and artistic functions of this often-overlooked furniture form.
Students will:
- look at, describe, discuss, and compare chairs that are made for decorative and functional purposes;
- create a brief written report, PowerPoint presentation, or web page focusing on chairs;
- build a small, three-dimensional model in the shape of a chair using small sticks/branches and twine or neutral yarn/string; and
- consciously incorporate repetition, movement, and texture.
ARTSEDGE provides detailed instructions for completing the lesson, a supply list, suggestions for assessment and extension activities, and links to related web resources.
