In this lesson, students explore images of magical creatures from around the world. Students will discuss the special attributes of such creatures, view images of mythological creatures, and listen to stories about them. Finally, students will create puppets representing magical creatures and put on puppet shows, dramatizing original stories about their creatures.

Grade 1

  • Goal 1: The learner will develop critical and creative thinking skills and perceptual awareness necessary for understanding and producing art.
    • Objective 1.04: Discuss and examine familiar objects and literature to inspire imagery.
    • Objective 1.05: Carefully observe and examine the world around them.
  • Goal 4: The learner will choose and evaluate a range of subject matter and ideas to communicate intended meaning in artworks.
    • Objective 4.02: Create, discuss and/or write simple stories about one's own artwork.
    • Objective 4.04: Use imagination to interpret environments other than one's own

Grade 2

    • Objective 1.03: Develop strategies for imagining and implementing images.
    • Objective 1.05: Recognize that in a world of imagination there is no right or wrong, but that some solutions are better than others.
    • Objective 1.08: Recognize that images from reality and from fantasy may be used to create original art.
  • Goal 2: The learner will develop skills necessary for understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes.
    • Objective 2.05: Depict self and others in a variety of real and imaginary situations.
  • Goal 4: The learner will choose and evaluate a range of subject matter and ideas to communicate intended meaning in artworks.
    • Objective 4.01: Create, discuss, and/or write about whether the content of their artwork is reality or fantasy.
    • Objective 4.02: Create fantasy environments.

Kindergarten

  • Goal 2: The learner will develop skills necessary for understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes.
    • Objective 2.08: Create original pictures of self, others, animals and objects.

    • Objective 4.03: Invent original and personal imagery from observation and imagination to convey meaning and not rely on copying or tracing another's work.
