In this lesson, students create multiplication stories where one factor is 6 or 7, play a multiplication game, and then record their current level of mastery of the multiplication facts. Illuminations provides handouts and specific instructions for completing this lesson. Using a helpful website, students work through their multiplication table for 6 and work in groups to create a graph. Then, students participate in several other activities that assist in the memorization of the multiples of 7.

Students will:

  • Create and solve multiplication problems.
  • Practice selected multiplication facts.
  • Identify facts known at the immediate recall level.

NCTM Standards and Expectations:

  • Understand the effects of multiplying and dividing whole numbers.
  • Select appropriate methods and tools for computing with whole numbers from among mental computation, estimation, calculators, and paper and pencil according to the context and nature of the computation and use the selected method or tools.
  • Develop fluency with basic number combinations for multiplication and division and use these combinations to mentally compute related problems, such as 3050.
