A lesson plan for Grades 3–4 Mathematics
In the second lesson in a multi-part unit, students continue to explore geometric concepts by modeling on the geoboard. After assessing prior knowledge, the teacher engages students in a discussion about common properties among the figures they create. Then, students work in pairs to create four-sided figures and compare them. After completing a series of activities, students discuss what they learned in the lesson. Illuminations provides links to materials and detailed instructions necessary for completing the lesson.
Students will:
- Use geometric vocabulary.
- Identify, compare, and analyze characteristics of geometric shapes.
- Explore parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Describe location and movement using common language and geometric vocabulary.
- Build and draw geometric objects.
- Create and describe mental images of objects, patterns, and paths.
- Recognize geometric ideas and relationships and apply them to other disciplines and to problems that arise in the classroom or in everyday life.

Mathematics (2004)
Grade 3
- Goal 3: Geometry - The learner will recognize and use basic geometric properties of two- and three-dimensional figures.
- Objective 3.01: Use appropriate vocabulary to compare, describe, and classify two- and three-dimensional figures.
- Objective 3.02: Use a rectangular coordinate system to solve problems.
- Graph and identify points with whole number and/or letter coordinates.
- Describe the path between given points on the plane.
Grade 4
- Goal 3: Geometry - The learner will recognize and use geometric properties and relationships.
- Objective 3.01: Use the coordinate system to describe the location and relative position of points and draw figures in the first quadrant.
- Objective 3.02: Describe the relative position of lines using concepts of parallelism and perpendicularity.
