A lesson plan for Grades 6–8 Computer Technology Skills
During this lesson, students compare and contrast the characteristics of electronic text with traditionally printed text, gaining a deeper understanding of how to navigate and comprehend information found on the Internet. First, students make observations about the way they read a textbook by briefly skimming the chapter and independently making a list of the types of textual aids they use when reading. Then, using the Internet Workshop form, students examine how they read text from the Internet site Cow’s Eye Dissection. Finally, the teacher engages students in a discussion about specific information they gathered while navigating the site, a comparison of how they read each type of text, and an extension discussion about how writing Internet text might be different from writing traditional text. Readwritethink provides links to additional activities and lessons teachers can use to extend the comparison of strategies used to read electronic and traditional texts.
