A lesson plan for Grades 3–5 English Language Arts
This student-organized, student-driven reading experience builds community in the classroom and encourages students to read independently, taking responsibility for their literacy learning. After being introduced to book clubs, students choose a book to read and a group with whom they want to read. While reading the self-selected book, students discuss the plot and characters, make predictions about what will happen in the text, and compare the book to others they have read. Students guide the activity by setting ground rules, creating a reading and discussion schedule, and by keeping notes on their talks. Readwritethink provides links to web resources about book clubs and suggests extension activities.
