In this lesson, students will observe the amount of water in an open container over time, and they will observe the amount of water in a closed container over time. Students will compare and contrast the sets of observations over time.

It is recommended that this lesson follow the K-2 lesson on solid to liquid change of state. As late as upper elementary, students have a difficult time accepting that a substance exists if they cannot see it. This lesson is designed to lay the foundation for many critical benchmarks that follow. At this age, students should be able to recognize the pattern of liquid to solid and solid to liquid.

The students will observe a phenomenon that they see on a daily basis. A sponge dries out, puddles on a playground disappear, and clothes that are wet, dry. Also, the students will be exposed to a lower level concept of the water cycle in that water is able to take many forms but it is still water. This lesson is designed to help the students prepare themselves for the idea that most substances may exist as a solid, liquid, or a gas depending on the temperature, pressure, and nature of that substance. This understanding is critical to understanding that water in our world is constantly cycling as a solid, liquid, or gas. In this lesson, students will observe water over time in both open and closed containers and keep diagrams and notes of both containers in a journal.
