In this lesson, the second in a two-part series, students learn the kinds of things that plants need to grow well. Students also learn more about where food comes from and the role of workers involved in the production and transportation process of getting food into stores. After a brief orientation to plants from an online web resource, students discuss the necessary components to effective plant growth. Then, in groups, students plant seeds and care for them using different methods. The teacher encourages students to record daily observations for the plant groups and evaluate how the different methods of care have resulted in the growth of the plants. Science NetLinks provides student handouts, the plant growth observation chart for teachers, and directions for completing the experiment. This lesson plan also contains links to the Jay Jay the Jet Plane website, the 4-H Virtual Farm, and Kids Farm, an online resource that introduces many types of farm animals, wild animals, farm equipment, and how certain fruits and vegetables grow.
