In this Science Update, students explore how a simple worm provides a model for testing drug effects on the human heart. The roundworm known as the C. elegans has a pharynx, or feeding tube that beats rhythmically, has similar electrical properties and genes to the human heart. Christina Petersen, an anesthesiology professor at Vanderbilt University, and her team examine why drugs that block a potassium channel called HERG sometimes trigger fatal heart arrhythmias. Simple worms give them insight as to how human proteins react to the drug. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, helpful definitions for technical terms, and questions to engage students in discussion about whether or not the worm is a good model for the human heart and other possible examples of models that mimic human systems. This lesson also contains links to the University of Wooster’s introduction to C. elegans and another site that provides research and information about this type of worm.
