Bouncing babies
In this Science Update, students explore the idea that babies can learn music by feeling it as well as hearing it. Psychologist Laurel Trainor of McMaster University had mother bounce their babies to a specific beat and found that babies preferred the same rhythms when played again. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in discussion about how rhythms were possibly chosen for the experiment and what might the outcomes have been had the researchers changed the study. This lesson also contains links to other studies that have attempted to connect music with memory and learning.
