In this Science Update, students explore how the restoration and conservation of an artwork is time-consuming and painstaking. Guillermo Sapiro, an engineering professor at the University of Minnesota has developed a mathematical algorithm to fill in holes, scratches and creases in damaged masterpieces. Using computer modeling, these equations can map out a restoration in less than a minute that a human expert might take weeks to plan. Professionals can then use these models to guide their work. The Office of Naval Research is also using the equations to sharpen surveillance photos and other electronic images. In the future, algorithms like those mentioned in the audio file could become standard features on computers and wireless devices, making it possible to receive smaller files and turn them into detailed images. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions to engage students in discussion about the process of art conservation, some other potential applications for the technology, and which restorations would be helped the most by this process. This activity also contains links to the researchers’ website, the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s site on restoring paintings, UCLA’s Image Processing Research Group, and Movie Mistakes, a site that tracks errors made in films.
