In this Science Update, students explore how scientists are designing fleets of small, cheap robots that might revolutionize farming. Tony Grift, an agricultural engineer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his colleagues are designing a variety of robots that can perform basic farming tasks, like weeding. One of the challenges of this development is teaching robots how to navigate outdoor terrain. They have created prototypes that can detect corn rows and move through the crops, which might replace expensive equipment or eliminate backbreaking human labor one day. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions to engage students in discussion about the benefits and limitations of using small, inexpensive robots, the challenges of designing robots that can operate outdoors, and other uses for such technology. This activity also contains links to “Bugs on Mars,” a feature by Science News Online and “Asteroid Eaters,” from Space.com.
