In this Science Update, students explore what scientists have to say about people making cell phone calls when they are stuck in traffic. Bill Knee of the National Transportation Research Center at Oak Ridge National Lab believes that the ever-present cell phone can change that. He and his colleagues are testing a system that uses cell phone signals to monitor traffic flow. Because cell phones have to self-orient with towers, it is possible to estimate travel time between zones, which, when the information is fed into computers, allows researchers to monitor the rate traffic is moving. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions to engage students in discussion about cell phone technology, traffic patterns, and other uses for similar technology. This activity also contains links to How Stuff Works and web resources that use unused computing time to do scientific research.
