In this lesson, students broaden their awareness of technology by examining inventions of the past and present and by learning how inventions inspire and lead to the development of other inventions. After engaging in a discussion of what “technology” means, students classify items as to whether or not they can be considered technology. Then students complete the student E-Sheet, which they should use to explore an invention timeline on “The History of Inventions,” which highlights a number of important human-made developments. Upon completion of the investigation, the teacher engages students in a conversation about the benefits of technology. Finally, students choose one invention and conduct more research on that specific innovation. Science NetLinks provides links to student handouts, web resources, questions for discussion, and instructions for completing the activity. This lesson also contains links to similar activities and the “Inventor of the Week” site from The Invention Dimension.
