In this lesson, students explore the purpose and constraints of technology by preparing a spacecraft for a mission to Mercury. After students are introduced to the planet Mercury, they discuss the need for space exploration and the technology involved in the process. Then, after reading more information on the planet, students use the online interactive to design a plan and prepare a spacecraft for a mission to Mercury. Students problem-solve and work in small groups in order to complete the tasks. Science NetLinks provides student handouts, links to necessary web resources, and detailed instructions for completing the lesson. This lesson also contains links to similar Science NetLinks lessons and other sites that provide information about the entire solar system.
