In this Science Update, students explore how controlling a robot with thoughts could be a helpful idea for people with paralyzing diseases. Miguel Nicolelis, a neurobiologist at Duke University, hopes to be able to create a program that will enable people with paralyzing injuries or diseases to control robotic limbs that will assist them. By recording the brain patterns of patients, they have taught a robotic arm to respond to brain signals. Eventually, the researchers hope to fit paralyzed patients with permanent brain implants to use with the device. Once they are installed, they could transmit information through wireless networking, just like you would use to surf the Internet from a laptop or a cell phone. The result would take remote control to a whole new level. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions to engage students in discussion about the possible benefits and limitations of a thought-controlled robot, how the technology could inform other areas of research, and what questions are still unanswered about this research. This activity also contains links to the researcher’s website, an article from the BBC News, and “Mind Games,” a European company that designs video games that can be controlled by a player’s brainwaves.
