In this lesson, students are introduced to star patterns and are encouraged to observe stars in the night sky. After discussing what they know about stars, students observe star patterns from online pictures as the teacher facilitates a discussion about what they see. Students examine the pictures of the stars and talk about the ones they think they’ve seen prior to the seeing the pictures. Finally, students review their observations and discuss how their personal observations differ from the images presented in class. Science NetLinks provides student handouts, links to web resources that provide images of stars, and detailed instructions for completing the lesson. This lesson also contains a link to a website that helps students make their own star clocks.
