A lesson plan for Grades 6–8 Science
In this lesson, students explore the careers of prominent African Americans in science, mathematics, and technology. It is important for students to understand how science is organized because, as adults in a democracy, they will be in a position to influence what public support will be provided for basic and applied science. Using the African American Scientists student E-Sheet, students should read about the career of Dr. Ben Carson and discuss his life story briefly with the class. Then, students evaluate the role that African American scientists have played in science, mathematics, and engineering. Finally, students create posters that display the information from their research and present their findings to the class. Science NetLinks provides links to student web resources, detailed instructions for completing the lesson, and links to multiple websites that highlight the work of African American scientists.
